Marriage Advice
Your marriage is worth the effort!
Looking for marriage advice to improve your marriage?
We've put together some marriage tips that we hope you will find helpful.
We know you have your
own favorite marriage advice so here's your chance to share it with
everyone that visits this site. Help make other marriages as good
as yours!
What works for one couple may not help another.
If some of these ideas don't meet your needs, just skip them.
We've been married for almost 25 years and are always working
to improve our marriage. We also
have the benefit of being surrounded by several couples that have
been married for as long as us, or longer. Having parents that
were married for 62 years doesn't hurt either.
If you want to
improve your marriage, a great way to start is
by learning new relationship building tools that will help you
grow together.
We have plenty of marriage experience to draw from
in giving this marriage advice, although most will come directly
from our own relationship.
You may find that some of our marriage advice seems
rather simplistic. To be honest, you're right. None of these tips
are very difficult. The most difficult thing about any of our recommendations
is that you actually have to put them in to practice…regularly!
A good marriage takes work, and more of the same.
We won't promise that you won't still have some
arguments, or say some hurtful things in the future. Unfortunately
as long as we are in our earth suits we are prone to earthly failings.
We recommend you get over it and move on.
It's much more fun getting along
than getting a pillow and a blanket for the sofa anyway.
Marriage advice you can live by...
If you want a good marriage we suggest you make
the following marriage advice part of your daily routine from this
day forward:
Pray together
– Not just at meal time. We pray together every day before one
of us walks out the door to go to work. We also pray at night
before we go to sleep. These are minimum prayer times. You should
find at least one or two other times to pray together each day
if possible. There is always someone or something to pray about
so this should not be a difficult thing. Of all the marriage
advice you'll ever receive from anyone, please don't ever forget
to place prayer at the top of your list.
Kiss often
– This should be an easy thing to do and something you should
not have to be reminded about. We kiss every day before one
of us walks out the door to go to work. We kiss as soon as we
see each other anytime we meet. We kiss at bedtime every night
before we say goodnight. Show one another that your relationship
is a priority even above your children. Greet each other with
a kiss before engaging with the rest of your family.
The "kiss often" marriage
advice is very important and you should not neglect this ever!
Leave room for grace – You generally have no idea what your spouse has experienced
on any given day when you are apart. It's so very easy to come
together and fall into an argument over something that has nothing
to do with anything. Work on keeping your cool and seeing things
from your spouse's perspective. We think this is awesome marriage
advice and it will take you a long ways towards having a good
marriage.
Don't take each other
for granted – Men, your wife is not your mother or
your maid. Women, your husband is not a fairy tale prince; he
will make mistakes. Work together to encourage one another.
Speak with gentleness and love to your spouse. Your spouse deserves
your respect and should return it to you as well.
Talk and Listen
– This is so very important. Women have a strong desire to have
meaningful communication with their husbands. Men need to give
focused attention to what is being spoken and participate in
the conversation; not just grunt. Active listening is difficult
for some men so this may be the toughest item on the list.
Men –
Turn off the TV when your wife is speaking to you. Stop
whatever you are doing and give her your full attention.
Is the ball game really going to make a difference on an
eternal level? Your relationship with your wife will! You
know you can't focus on more than one thing at a time anyway.
Women
– Have some consideration when picking your conversation
times. Try not to choose to have a heavy discussion during
the 4th quarter of a ball game. Give him a break if the
topic can wait a few minutes. You'll both be happier with
your discussion.
Worship Together
– Attend weekly worship services together. It draws you nearer
together and nearer to God.
Hold hands during prayer
– Whenever you pray, hold hands. It sounds so simple and yet
it builds a beautiful bond. Don't forget to do this every time
you pray.
Eat meals together as
a family – We are amazed at how many people do not
eat meals together as a family. This is a bit of simple marriage
advice that is important to your entire family. Sharing meals
together as a family encourages good communication within the
family and will have a positive impact on the marriage relationship.
You also might develop a better relationship with your children!
Make time to have meals together as a family.
Date Night
– Most young couples think they are going to have a date night
1-2 times per week when they first get married. That sounds
so wonderful! Once they have children and wake up, that disappears
and they are lucky if they go on a date once in 3 months. Work
hard to have a date night at least once per month. It will help
keep things fresh. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just some
time together...without the kids!
A night away
– We have found that it can make a huge difference in your relationship
if you can get away with your spouse for a night about once
every 4-6 months. It doesn't have to be anything fancy or expensive;
just a night somewhere that does not require cooking, cleaning,
phone calls, or child care. It will rejuvenate your relationship.
Marriage Advice Special Alert
Leave the computer at home!
Marriage Conference
– We are great fans of the Family Life Marriage Conferences.
If these are ever available to you we recommend you find a way
to attend. We make a habit of attending one every 4-5 years
and it has always blessed our marriage. There are many other
good marriage conferences available from other organizations
that you can also consider attending. Marriage conferences provide
wonderful marriage advice from many experts on the subject.
Your marriage is never so good that
a marriage conference can't help make it just a bit better!
Spiritual Leadership
– Men, whether you like it or not it's your responsibility to
be the spiritual leaders in your home. When you take on this
role as God intended you will see great things begin to happen
in your life. Your family home will become more peaceful, and
relationships will grow stronger. Some may think this is a bit
out of scope for marriage advice but if you give it a try we
believe you'll notice a difference in your marriage relationship.
Obviously the list above is not all inclusive, nor will it ensure
that you are going to have a good marriage just by following our
marriage advice. We know from experience that all of these things
will add value to your relationship and strengthen your marriage.
Ultimately only you can decide if yours will be a good marriage.
Be committed to each other and to your
relationship. Put the necessary work into your marriage and
it will be more than good... it will be GREAT!
Remember, a good marriage doesn't just happen. A good marriage takes work!
